International students in the UK are being encouraged to sharpen their skills, build strong personal brands, and prepare for tougher competition in the graduate job market.

However, rising employer uncertainty, growing graduate anxiety, and a surge in job scams have made the landscape more challenging. Students were urged to ask “tough questions” about career pathways and to develop adaptability as a key strength.

AI and data science emerged as the most in-demand fields among attendees, with many also exploring opportunities in digital marketing, finance, biotechnology, and creative industries. “Employers aren’t just looking for textbook skills anymore — they’re seeking forward-thinking talent who can innovate,” said Lee Wildman, director of global engagement at Queen Mary.

A keynote address by Jennifer Ogunleye, B2B communications lead at Google, stressed the importance of personal branding. “What matters more than ever is how you present yourself: What are you passionate about beyond a job title? That’s what sets you apart from AI and from competition,” she said.

The UK’s Graduate Route, which currently allows international students to work sponsor-free for up to two years, was another key talking point. With changes under the May 2025 immigration white paper expected to reduce this to 18 months and link it more closely to skill-based roles, students were reminded of the need to stay informed about shifting visa rules.

Organisations including Publicis Groupe, Reed Recruitment, Hyatt Place, and GoBritanya also participated, offering insights into career opportunities across corporate, hospitality, legal, and FinTech sectors.
