Christchurch, New Zealand – Ara Institute of Canterbury, one of New Zealand’s leading educational institutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Easwari Engineering College in Chennai, India. The agreement aims to enhance programme development, international study opportunities, and joint research collaborations between the two institutions.

This partnership strengthens Ara’s presence in India’s southern region, establishing deeper ties with key academic networks. Deanna Anderson, Ara’s Director of International, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, noting the strong reputation and regional influence of Easwari Engineering College.

“Easwari Engineering College is a high-quality institution offering more than 20 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,” Anderson said. “Its affiliation with the high-ranking Anna University in Chennai further reinforces our commitment to excellence in education.”

Cultural and Academic Exchange

The Easwari delegation, led by Chairman R. Shivakumar and Trustee Sai Kishore, was warmly welcomed at Ara’s Te Puna Wānaka whare with a traditional Māori ceremony (whakatau) and cultural performances.

In his speech, delivered in Tamil, te reo Māori, and English, Shivakumar expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating:
“As we discuss collaboration between our institutions, let us remember that it is not just infrastructure, technology, or systems that drive success, but the people—our students, faculty, and leaders—who inspire change and innovation.”

A Long-Term Partnership

The five-year agreement was formalised through speeches from Ara’s Head of Engineering and Architecture, Robert de Roo, and Manager of Architectural Studies and Interior Design, Adam Khan. Following the signing, the Easwari delegation toured Ara’s facilities, further strengthening ties between the two institutions.

As a gesture of cultural appreciation, Easwari Engineering College presented Ara with a Tanjore painting, a traditional South Indian art form known for its intricate designs and gold embellishments.

“We’re excited about the future and look forward to exploring opportunities for joint programmes, research collaborations, and student exchanges,” said Anderson.

This partnership marks a significant step in fostering global educational ties between New Zealand and India, enhancing opportunities for students and faculty on both sides.
