The National University of Singapore (NUS) has opened applications for its new Master of Science in Infectious Disease Emergencies (MSc IDE) programme. The application period begins on November 1, 2024, and closes on April 30, 2025. The first intake will commence in July 2025.

This coursework-based programme can be completed in one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). Designed to equip students with expertise in infectious disease emergencies, the curriculum includes ethical, leadership, and legal frameworks relevant to the field. To graduate, students must complete 40 units of coursework. The programme is led by experts from the Centre for Infectious Disease Emergency Response (CIDER) at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Career Prospects for MSc IDE Graduates

Graduates of this programme will be well-prepared for careers in emergency planning, healthcare systems, public health departments, and policymaking. Opportunities will be available in government agencies, health ministries, and global health organisations, particularly in pandemic preparedness and health security. Additionally, those interested in academia and research institutes will find ample opportunities for further growth.

Former WHO Chief Scientist Joins NUS Board

In a significant development, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO) and ex-Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has been appointed to the NUS Board of Trustees, effective April 1, 2025.

Hsieh Fu Hua, Chairman of the NUS Board, welcomed Dr Swaminathan, stating, “With her expertise in research translation and global health, she will provide valuable insights to guide NUS’s strategic direction as a leading global university.”

The appointment follows the departure of Koon Hean and Chin Hua, who have been recognised for their valuable contributions to NUS.

This new Master of Science in Infectious Disease Emergencies underscores Singapore’s commitment to advancing global health education and strengthening pandemic preparedness.
