The University of Portsmouth has officially launched its London Pathway College (LPC), marking a major step in its efforts to expand access to higher education and strengthen international engagement.

The unveiling took place on 22 May at the university’s newly developed London campus in Waltham Forest, with key stakeholders, university leaders, recruitment partners, and the Mayor of Waltham Forest in attendance. The initiative is a collaborative project between the University of Portsmouth (UoP) and Northchild Group, a global property investment and development firm.

London Pathway College will welcome its first cohort in the upcoming academic year, offering foundation, first-year, and pre-master’s programmes. These courses are designed to prepare students for progression into full degrees at the University of Portsmouth’s London campus.

Bobby Mehta, pro-vice chancellor for global engagement at UoP, stated: “The London Pathway College has been established on the foundation of a shared commitment to academic excellence and student achievement. This launch marks the beginning of a transformative educational journey.”

Principal of UoP London, Jonathan Sandling, emphasised the university’s focus on widening participation. “The college creates a valuable bridge for students taking the next step into undergraduate or postgraduate study,” he said.

The college aims to offer students a holistic learning experience, blending academic preparation with real-world exposure. Pathway director Libby Pearson described the initiative as a “new breed of pathway”, fully integrated into university life from day one. “We work closely with the borough and employers, ensuring students have access to local career opportunities,” she added.

Kai Liu, COO of UoP London and director at Northchild Group, stressed the importance of community connection and revealed future plans for an industry-placement track to further enhance student career outcomes.

The University of Portsmouth, which welcomes students from over 110 countries, hopes the LPC will provide international students with an enriching academic and cultural experience in the heart of the UK’s capital.
