University of Toronto Tops QS Sustainability Rankings Again

For the second consecutive year, the University of Toronto, Canada, has secured the top position in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2025. The ranking assessed over 1,700 institutions across 95 countries, solidifying Canada’s reputation as a leader in sustainability-focused education.

The QS Sustainability Rankings evaluate universities based on their social impact, governance, and environmental impact, with the University of Toronto excelling in all areas. The university ranked first globally for social impact and environmental performance, while securing fifth place in governance.

“We are thrilled that our university is once again ranked first in the world in the QS Sustainability Rankings. The U of T community remains deeply committed to advancing sustainability as one of the most pressing challenges of our time,” said a representative from the university.

Canada emerged as a standout performer in the 2025 rankings. The University of British Columbia shared fifth place globally with University College London, making Canada the only country with two universities in the top five. Additionally, McGill University and Western University secured the 15th and 30th spots, respectively, further highlighting Canada’s excellence in sustainability education.

The University of Toronto continues to lead climate-focused initiatives, including:

  1. Project SHIFT, aimed at accelerating the transition to electricity.
  2. Project Leap, a $138-million infrastructure project designed to reduce emissions by 50% on the St. George campus by 2027.

The university is also investing in energy retrofits and sustainable building constructions to address climate challenges.

Overall, the University of Toronto remains Canada’s highest-ranked university, consistently performing well across major global rankings, including Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, and U.S. News & World Report. This achievement reaffirms Canada’s role in driving sustainability and impactful research on the global stage.
