The United States will end its ‘Dropbox’ visa renewal option, officially known as the Interview Waiver Program, for most non-immigrant categories from 2 September 2025. The change applies to visa types including H-1B, H-4, F, M, O-1, J, and L-1, and will require all applicants, even children under 14 and seniors over 79, to attend in-person interviews with a consular officer.
The policy shift, proposed during the Trump administration, is intended to strengthen security and immigration screening procedures.

End of a Faster Process

The Dropbox programme allowed eligible candidates to renew visas by submitting required documents at designated locations without attending an interview. This was especially valued by applicants with a clean visa history, offering a faster and less stressful process.

Limited Exceptions

Diplomatic and official visa holders, including TECRO E-1, NATO-1 to NATO-6, G-1 to G-4, A-1, A-2, and C-3 (excluding attendants or personal staff), will still be eligible for interview waivers. A small number of B-1/B-2 tourist and business visa renewals may also qualify under strict conditions, though consular officers retain discretion to request interviews.

Impact on Indian Applicants

India is one of the countries where Dropbox usage has been widespread, particularly for H-1B workers and students. With consulates in India already experiencing some of the world’s longest wait times, the removal of the Dropbox option is expected to further strain the system.

Potential consequences include increased demand for interview slots, delays in onboarding skilled workers, disruptions to academic schedules, and logistical challenges for families now required to attend interviews. Reports suggest that some Dropbox appointments in August and September 2025 have already been cancelled, forcing applicants into the in-person process earlier than expected.

What Applicants Should Do

Immigration experts recommend that eligible applicants complete renewals before the September deadline to avoid additional delays. Employers and universities in both the United States and India may also need to adjust timelines to accommodate the changes.

Applicants are advised to monitor the US embassy and consulate websites for updates on appointment availability and processing timelines.
