The Karnataka government, in collaboration with the British Council, has launched four new skilling initiatives under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC).

These initiatives aim to transform higher education by enhancing language skills, employability, and the overall transition to employment.
The programmes include:

  • Scholars for Overachievers in Undergraduate Talent Programme (SOUP)
  • English Skills for Youth Programme from the British Council and Microsoft India, targeting learners in state-funded engineering colleges
  • Staff Development Training in Foreign Service for International Officers
  • Freemium Digital Library Wall at Bengaluru City University

Commenting on these initiatives, Alison Barrett MBE, Director of India at the British Council, stated, “These programmes will not only enhance international relations but will also encourage the exchange of knowledge between countries. Our goals include developing language skills, upgrading executive and employability skills, and assisting students in their transition to the workplace. This reflects the values of access to education and the positive impacts we aspire to achieve globally.”

The launch of the SCOUT programme will see KSHEC select a cohort of 30 participants, comprising five students and one faculty member from each of the following universities: Bangalore University, Bengaluru City University, Gulbarga University Kalaburagi, Raichur University, Tumkur University, and Rani Channamma University.

Additionally, two officials from KSHEC will accompany the group for a live learning experience at the University of East London from 9th to 22nd November.

To further enhance international experiences, the British Council and the Karnataka government have also introduced the Capacity Building for International Officers programme. This workshop, aimed at promoting the internationalisation and Strategic Support Action (SSA) focus of Indian universities, has been selected by KSHEC and will involve participants from over 28 universities.

Furthermore, the FMS Freemium Digital Library Wall will provide faculty and students with access to an additional tier of free digital content.
