Despite rising concerns over safety, stability, and visa hurdles, a new survey suggests that most international students still plan to pursue higher education in the United States.

According to Pioneer Academics, which conducted the study between May and July 2025, nearly 91% of surveyed students expressed an intention to study in the US. The research drew on 303 responses from international students in grades 9–12 who had participated in the selective Pioneer Research Program, offering an early look at the admissions cycle set to conclude in March 2026.

The survey revealed varying levels of confidence. A majority of students (168) reported concerns about studying in the US but remained determined to go. Another 92 said they had no reservations, while just 15 noted strong concerns without alternative options.

The findings come amid significant challenges for US international education. The number of international students arriving on F-1 visas fell by almost 30% in July 2025 compared with the previous year. Indian enrolments dropped nearly 50%, while Chinese students declined by 26%. These shifts are largely attributed to disrupted visa processes, stricter immigration measures, and an uncertain political climate.

Still, demand for US education remains strong, particularly among students pursuing STEM fields. Respondents cited international tensions (54%), political instability (45%), and personal safety (31%) as major concerns. Financial pressures were also noted, with 26% pointing to limited clarity around aid and affordability.

Interestingly, the survey highlighted a growing openness to global alternatives. Around 5% of respondents said they had ruled out US colleges, while 3% remained undecided. Nearly a third reported shifting preferences, applying to US institutions but with less intent to enrol.

However, broader research by Studyportals provided a contrasting perspective, ranking the US as the top destination for student satisfaction in 2025, with a rating of 4.32 out of 5—ahead of Belgium and Austria. The findings suggest that, while the US faces stiff competition and ongoing challenges, it continues to hold strong appeal for international students worldwide.
