London Metropolitan University has been named the best in the UK for the progress its students make, according to the Guardian University Guide 2026. The ranking highlights the transformative role the institution plays in supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds to succeed.

The Guardian’s value added score assesses how students perform in their degrees compared to what might be expected from their entry grades. With a score of 8 out of 10, London Met has been ranked joint first in the UK alongside Goldsmiths, University of London.

Professor Julie Hall, Vice-Chancellor of London Met, described the recognition as a reflection of both student ambition and staff dedication. “League tables never tell the whole story, but they can shine a light on where universities make a real difference. I am incredibly proud that London Met has been recognised as first in the UK for value added,” she said.

The institution also secured top positions across multiple subject areas, including second place nationally for Interior Design and Film Production. Other notable rankings include Psychology (20th), Criminology (25th), Architecture (35th), and International Relations (28th). Courses in Nutrition, Graphic Design, Sociology, and Fine Art also performed strongly.

London Met is well known for its commitment to widening participation, with many students being the first in their family to enter higher education. The top value added score underlines the University’s mission of supporting diverse learners, including those balancing studies with work or caring responsibilities.

The achievement comes as the University continues to invest in student facilities, including major redevelopment at its Holloway campus and new resources in Shoreditch. With the overall national ranking moving up four places to 89th, the results confirm London Met’s growing reputation in the UK higher education sector.
