Purdue University, located in the United States, has been ranked among the top 10 US universities with the highest number of international students, according to the 2024 Open Doors report released by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

The report ranks Purdue ninth among over 4,500 public and private institutions and 24th overall for international enrolments. For the academic year 2023–24, the university recorded 12,181 international students from 130 countries, reflecting a 6.2 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Heidi Arola, assistant vice president of global partnerships and programmes at Purdue, highlighted the importance of these students to the university and beyond. “Our international students are vital to the vibrancy and success of our campus community and to our state’s economy,” Arola said, emphasising how the diverse student body enhances learning and prepares all students for a connected world.

Purdue’s largest share of international students is in its College of Science, comprising 24.4 per cent of the total, followed by the College of Engineering at 22.4 percent and the Mitch Daniels School of Business at 17.6 percent. Other prominent areas include Purdue Polytechnic Institute (15 percent) and the College of Agriculture (12.7 per cent).

International students also significantly contribute to Indiana’s economy. According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators, Purdue’s international student population and their families generate $340 million annually for the state, creating over 3,300 jobs.

As Purdue celebrates 75 years of collaboration with the IIE, the university continues to cement its position as a hub for global education, enriching both the academic and cultural landscape of the United States.
