The European Union is set to revolutionise travel across its borders with the introduction of a digital Entry/Exit System (EES), replacing traditional passport stamping with biometric checks. Scheduled to go live on 12 October 2025, this major development will impact non-EU travellers, including those from the UK and the US, entering or leaving the Schengen Area.

The EES will register travellers’ names, travel documents, fingerprints, facial images, and dates and locations of border crossings. This data will be stored for three years and used to track short-stay limits and identify overstays. The system will be rolled out gradually across the 29 Schengen countries, including 25 EU member states as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Instead of manual passport stamps, travellers will use self-service kiosks to scan their documents. These kiosks will collect biometric data and issue digital confirmations. The system aims to speed up the border process, reduce wait times, and improve overall security across European borders. Registration will be free for all users.

The European Commission confirmed that all member states are expected to implement the new process within six months of the October launch. In preparation, the UK government has allocated nearly £3.5 million (€4.1 million) each to major transport hubs like Eurostar, Eurotunnel, and the Port of Dover to install registration kiosks.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, stated, “By working closely with Member States and the transport sector, we are creating a secure, efficient, and travel-friendly framework that reflects Europe’s commitment to both security and technological innovation.”

Frequent travellers and cross-border commuters are expected to benefit the most, with smoother transitions and reduced paperwork. The move aligns with the EU’s broader goal of modernising its border control infrastructure while ensuring safety and compliance with travel regulations.

For travellers planning a trip to Europe later this year, being informed about the new EES requirements will be key to a smooth and hassle-free journey.
