Shift in Indian Students’ Course Choices, with Public Health and Nursing on the Rise

Over 1.3 million Indian students will be studying abroad in 2024, making them one of the largest groups of international students pursuing overseas education.
India has long been regarded as an important source country for international students. In recent years, universities in popular study destinations have had to adapt to changes in course preferences and student expectations.
According to Disha Gupta, Head of Operations and Recruitment – India, Nepal & Sri Lanka at Birmingham City University, “These preferences have shifted significantly, especially in the years following the pandemic, with a growing interest in public health and nursing courses. Previously, students were primarily focused on business and computing studies.”
Concerns surrounding the graduate route have sparked discussions among students, with many showing interest in new programmes that offer placement years. Gupta also mentioned that, “A number of students have approached us with questions about the graduate route, job placements, and even the safety of international students, especially in light of recent policy changes. We have made efforts to ensure students receive clear and accurate information to avoid confusion.”
Despite a slower growth rate in student numbers this September, Gupta remains optimistic: “Although growth has been somewhat sluggish, it hasn’t dampened our spirit. We are proud to see an overall increase in student enrolment.”
The British Council, as a cultural and educational organisation promoting opportunities in Great Britain, approved the recognition of UK qualifications in India in July 2022.
Rittika Chanda Parruck, MBE, Director of Education – India at the British Council, stated that memoranda of understanding (MoU) like this will benefit Indian students wishing to return to India after completing their studies in the UK.
