The University of Southampton, UK, is set to open its first offshore campus in India by August 2025, becoming the first foreign university to do so under UGC norms. Located in the Delhi-NCR region, the campus will initially offer six courses, expanding to over 30 programmes in the next eight years, with plans to enrol over 5,500 students.

Andrew Atherton, Vice President for International and Engagement, stated that the campus will begin with four undergraduate programmes focused on AI, data science, and entrepreneurship, along with two postgraduate courses in computing and technology. Tuition fees at the India campus will be approximately 60% of those at the Southampton campus, making international education more affordable while maintaining the same admission standards.

The university aims to address India’s growing demand for higher education by catering primarily to Indian students. However, the campus will also be open to international students, potentially attracting those from nearby regions.

Faculty recruitment will be diverse, with positions advertised both in the UK and India to ensure a mix of local and international expertise. This new campus aims to become a regional education hub, offering a Southampton degree at a lower cost.
