The University of Bath is offering its scientists and engineers a unique opportunity to apply for the 2025 ABSW Media Fellowships. The fellowship scheme, in collaboration with the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW), is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience working at prominent UK media outlets such as The Guardian, BBC Breakfast, and New Scientist.

Applications for this prestigious fellowship are open until February 28, 2025, and two fellows from the University of Bath will be selected to undertake placements in 2025. Funded by ESRC and EPSRC Impact Acceleration Accounts, the fellowship aims to equip scientists and engineers with the skills to engage with the media, address misrepresentation, and bridge the gap between the scientific community and journalists.

The fellowships will allow the chosen individuals to spend two to six weeks working within a media environment, gaining experience in science communication and reporting. Participants will develop skills to handle public mistrust of science and learn how to convey complex scientific topics in an engaging and accessible manner.

Last year, Dr Abbie Jordan from the Centre for Pain Research and Professor Tiffany Taylor from the Milner Centre of Evolution both benefited from the scheme. Dr Jordan reflected, “My placement with BBC Science Focus was an incredible opportunity to develop my science communication skills, from writing to tight deadlines to crafting engaging stories for a broad audience.”

The University of Bath is also hosting a Media Masterclass event on February 12, 2025, where last year’s fellows will share their experiences with staff. The hybrid event will offer insights into the impact of science communication and the value of media collaborations for researchers.

This is an exceptional opportunity for University of Bath scientists and engineers to expand their media skills and engage with the public in new, impactful ways.
