Law students from Northumbria University, UK, recently participated in the inaugural Legal Knowledge Exchange Programme in Egypt. Hosted by the Office of the Attorney General of Egypt, this initiative aims to foster annual collaboration between international legal institutions and Egypt’s Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The programme saw the participation of 40 law students from Northumbria University, the German University in Cairo, and the University of Vienna. It provided a unique platform for hands-on legal training, comparative legal studies, and cross-cultural exchanges.

A Unique Learning Experience

The week-long exchange featured workshops, lectures, and visits to key legal institutions, including the Egyptian House of Representatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and the Supreme Constitutional Court. Through these visits, students gained insights into Egypt’s legislative, judicial, and executive processes, as well as international legal cooperation and digital transformation in the justice system.

Professor Mohamed Badar, Director of Northumbria’s International Criminal Law and Practice LLM Programme, highlighted the significance of this opportunity. He stated, “This visit was not just an academic opportunity to observe Egypt’s legal system – it was a platform for fostering dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding between countries and cultures.”

Legal Experts and Student Recognition

Distinguished legal professionals, including Amb. Dr Namira Negm, Director of the African Migration Observatory, and Chief Justice Boulos Fahmy Iskandar of the Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court, contributed to the programme. Justice Mohamed Shawky, Prosecutor General of Egypt, and Dr Jasmin Moussa, Legal Adviser to the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, also shared valuable insights.

Students received certificates of appreciation for their participation, reinforcing the programme’s importance in shaping future international law professionals.

Professor Michael Stockdale, Head of Northumbria Law School, described the visit as “an inspirational experience that exposed students to international legal systems and new professional networks.” Dr Malvika Unithan, Assistant Professor at Northumbria, added that the initiative offered an invaluable opportunity to understand global legal perspectives.

This exchange underscores the UK’s commitment to international legal education and reinforces Northumbria University’s role in preparing students for the evolving global legal landscape.
