The Trump administration has confirmed the revocation of more than 8,000 US student visas since January, making up ten percent of the over 80,000 non-immigrant visas cancelled so far this year. This total figure is more than double the number of revocations recorded in the previous year, signalling a broad and aggressive enforcement of immigration policy.

According to a State Department official, the primary reasons for the overall cancellations included criminal activity, with driving under the influence (DUIs), assault, and theft accounting for nearly half of all revocations. Specifically, about 16,000 visas were pulled for DUIs, 12,000 for assaults, and 8,000 for theft.

The State Department asserted that it revokes a visa whenever there is an indication of potential ineligibility, covering issues like criminal activity, a threat to public safety, and concerns over terrorist activity or support. Beyond criminal offenses, the administration has also targeted visa holders for other infractions, including political activism. The crackdown reflects the government’s stated policy to “always put the safety and interests of the American people first,” according to a recent social media announcement.

The current administration has simultaneously made it more difficult to obtain a visa, implementing tighter social media vetting and expanded screening processes. These measures have contributed to widespread uncertainty within the international student community and have already led to significant disruption, including a near month-long suspension of visa appointments at US embassies earlier this year.

The mass revocations, alongside other restrictive policies like proposed caps on international student enrolment, have been a source of ongoing concern for students and US higher education institutions alike.
