The government has extended work visa rules for partners of students pursuing education and seeking Green List qualifications. These qualifications, which are highly sought after in New Zealand, can significantly expedite the path to residency.
As announced on June 21, students with Level 7 or 8 qualifications listed on the Green List, along with their partners, can apply for an open work visa.

The revised Green List now includes Bachelor’s degrees and Bachelor Honours qualifications that lead to specific professional registrations.

“The occupations these qualifications lead to are highly skilled and in demand, such as nurses, doctors, teachers, and dentists,” said Jeannie Melville, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of Immigration at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Students holding a student visa for these qualifications can now sponsor their partners for a Student Work Visa. Additionally, partners of these students are eligible for dependent school-aged children to be considered domestic students under New Zealand Immigration rules.
These children can apply for a Dependent Child Student Visa, exempting them from school tuition fees. This applies to anyone with a Partner of a Student Work Visa.

“Our aim is to balance enabling people that New Zealand needs to work, visit, live, or study in the country while managing immigration risks,” Melville stated.

Furthermore, a December 2023 survey of 1,100 New Zealanders revealed that 75% believe international students benefit New Zealand, a notable increase from 57% in 2016. The survey highlighted that 81% of respondents felt international students enhance local cultural appreciation and diversity.
