The small island in the Mediterranean has a population of less than half a million but is home to some universities offering higher and further education. Among these, the Global Banking School (GBS) Malta will see its first cohort of Master’s students graduating in September.

The tuition fee for an undergraduate degree at GBS Malta is €6,000 per year, significantly lower than the annual fees for international students in countries such as the UK, Canada, the USA, and Australia.

Moreover, a national scheme that benefits international students in Malta means you can obtain a degree at an even lower cost.

Malta offers a Post-Study Work Visa that encourages graduates who wish to work in the country to apply for a rebate of up to 70% of their tuition fees – up to €12,500 – provided they secure a job within nine months of completing a full-time university course.

Thus, while obtaining a bachelor’s degree at GBS Malta costs €18,000, if you decide to stay in Malta after your studies and enter the job market, you will be required to pay tax.

“There is an income tax to be paid,” as per the sources . “And you receive 70% of your tuition fees back through a tax credit.”

Data from the Association of English Language Schools in Malta indicates the country’s continued growth as a preferred destination for foreign language students, particularly those from Latin America.

Recent statistics from FELTOM members reveal that the number of students enrolled in 2023 increased by over 20,000 to approximately 5,000, still below the 2019 record high of 83,610 students.

This shift is due to international students increasingly choosing countries outside the four major study destinations as Australia and Canada adopt more stringent immigration policies.
