Last week, the University of Melbourne inaugurated its first global centre in Delhi, marking a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between the educational systems of India and Australia.

Victorian MP Jacinta Allan officially opened this centre, which will focus on education, innovation, research, and community development programmes in India.

“The University of Melbourne is the leading university in Australia, and the Melbourne Global Centre will introduce various services to India, creating numerous opportunities for interaction and partnership in the Delhi region,” stated Allan.

The inauguration was attended by delegates from the University of Melbourne, the Australian High Commissioner to India, students, alumni, and other dignitaries.

Sara Wills, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global, Culture and Engagement at the University of Melbourne, noted that the centre will facilitate student exchanges, alumni engagement, and various welfare initiatives at Indian universities. “It will also host Alive Shows for cultural performances and art displays,” she added.

The university has also outlined plans for expansion into Asia and India in the coming years, citing the increasing opportunities for international research.

“Our Advancing Melbourne Globally strategy, which we launched earlier this year, reinforces our aim to become a knowledge hub in Asia and the Pacific by linking education with research,” remarked Wesley.

This initiative aligns with the Victorian government’s agenda to enhance transnational educational connections.

On 16 September, Allan announced the launch of the Yes to International Students fund—a $5 million investment directed towards Delhi. This fund will support Victorian universities and TAFEs with sector-specific start-up funding to broaden international educational partnerships.

Sources indicate that this initiative may help to mitigate restrictions faced by international students in Australia.
