UK universities are intensifying recruitment efforts in French-speaking African countries to diversify their student base and tap into new markets. Institutions are targeting countries like Senegal, Ivory Coast, Morocco, and Cameroon, seeking to attract more students despite English not being widely spoken in these regions.

The shift comes as student mobility trends show a rise in Francophone students opting for English-speaking destinations like the US and Canada. UK universities are now focusing on promoting their offerings and simplifying admission processes to compete in these markets. Recruiters cite the high quality of UK education and its reputation for producing critical thinkers as key selling points.

Emma Tarrant Tayou, director of the international education company G3, noted that the UK’s lack of promotion in these countries has led students to choose other destinations. To address this, G3 has established offices in Ivory Coast and Gabon to support students with university applications and visa processes.

British embassies are also backing these efforts, complementing the existing Chevening scholarships for students from Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Morocco. While challenges like limited access to English proficiency tests and visa appointments persist, recruiters believe targeted investments and increased local presence can bolster UK universities’ appeal in Francophone Africa.
