The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) in Japan has announced a partnership with Acumen, a Sannam S4 Group entity, to increase the number of South Asian students in Japan. Supported by the Japanese government, the collaboration aims to boost Japan’s internationalisation efforts and attract students from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

UTokyo, Japan’s oldest university, is ranked 32nd in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and is central to the country’s plans for global engagement. The institution seeks to raise international undergraduate enrolment to 30% and graduate enrolment to 40% by 2049, up from the current 2% and 30%, respectively. The partnership with Acumen is set to double South Asian student numbers between 2022 and 2029.

Dr Kaori Hayashi, UTokyo’s executive vice president, expressed enthusiasm for welcoming South Asian students to experience ‘world-class education, affordable tuition, and a safe, welcoming society.’ The initiative aligns with Japan’s goal of attracting 400,000 international students by 2033, following a 20% increase in international enrolment in 2023.

Acumen’s chief partnership officer, Marnie Watson, highlighted the importance of strategic student mobility in meeting Japan’s economic and educational objectives.
