New research from IDP Education reveals that international students are increasingly flexible about their study preferences due to evolving policies across major destinations. According to the sixth edition of IDP’s Emerging Futures research, which surveyed over 6,000 students from 114 countries, 66% are considering multiple countries for their studies – the highest figure in recent years.

Notably, 62% of students indicated they would alter their preferred study destination if post-study visa options were available. Factors such as lower savings requirements (58%) and cheaper visa fees (57%) are also influencing decisions. Additionally, 43% prioritise the potential for permanent residency when selecting where to study.

With Canada and Australia imposing restrictions on international student numbers and post-study work rights, students are exploring alternative locations, including the US and New Zealand, which are perceived as offering better quality and employment opportunities. The study highlights a 6% increase this year in students considering other destinations.

IDP’s Joanna Storti emphasised the importance of understanding student motivations during these uncertain times, urging educational institutions to listen closely to their needs as policies continue to shift.
