Vietnam has seen a remarkable 74% increase in SAT test-takers over the past year, with over 3,500 Vietnamese students taking the exam in 2023, according to IIG Vietnam, the country’s authorised SAT administrator. This significant rise highlights a growing trend among Vietnamese students aiming to pursue higher education abroad, particularly in the U.S., Europe, and other countries where the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is widely accepted for university admissions.

The SAT, which comprises Reading & Writing and Maths sections, is scored out of 1600, with scores above 1530 placing students in the global top 1%. According to the College Board, which oversees the SAT, around two million students take the test annually, with last year’s global average score at 1050.

Vietnam’s robust interest in overseas education is underscored by its ranking among the top 10 countries sending students abroad, with Vietnamese students among the top five groups of international students in the U.S., Australia, and Canada. This demand is also reflected domestically, as more Vietnamese universities are now recognising SAT scores for admissions. Notably, over 20 universities in northern Vietnam, including Hanoi University of Science and Technology, have adopted the SAT, setting benchmarks as high as 1450 out of 1600.

As the appetite for international education strengthens, SAT participation in Vietnam is expected to continue rising.
