The University of Cambridge, in collaboration with Trinity College, has unveiled a new initiative offering fully-funded PhD programmes, with a total of £48 million in funding. Starting in October 2025, the Trinity Cambridge Research Studentships (TCRS) will create opportunities for exceptional international students to engage in cutting-edge research across diverse fields.

Aimed at attracting the brightest global minds, this programme seeks PhD candidates with the potential to drive innovation in science, technology, and treatment development. These highly competitive scholarships are designed to identify future Nobel Laureates who could contribute an estimated £30 billion to the UK economy.

Dr Venki Ramakrishnan, Trinity Fellow and Nobel Laureate, emphasised the vital role of PhD students in advancing scientific discovery, stating: “PhD students are the lifeblood of new research, making breakthroughs in all areas of science.”

The initiative will fund approximately 300 PhD studentships over the next decade, targeting both international and domestic students. It comes in response to declining funding opportunities in the Humanities and Sciences.

Cambridge’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Bhaskar Vira, underscored the importance of sustained investment in research: “We are grateful for the funding provided by Trinity College, which will ensure more students can continue their research careers here in Cambridge.”

This landmark funding scheme represents a significant step in reinforcing the UK’s position as a global leader in research and innovation.
