Brown University, US has unveiled a new online Master’s degree programme in Data Science, set to begin in September 2025.
This 16-month course focuses on the intersection of data science, governance, policy, and society, aiming to equip students with the skills to analyse and apply data responsibly in real-world contexts.

The programme strikes a balance between technical knowledge in data science and an understanding of its social implications, particularly around machine learning and big data. It is designed for professionals seeking to advance their expertise and take on leadership roles in data-driven decision-making.

Applications for the first cohort are now open, with an early action deadline of 15 March 2025 and a final application deadline of 1 June 2025. The degree offered is a Master of Science (Sc.M.), which includes both coursework and an applied learning experience.

To be eligible, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, at least one semester of college-level statistics, and prior programming experience, particularly in Python. A minimum of two years of full-time professional experience is also required. Non-native English speakers must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, with a preference for TOEFL scores above 620 (pBT) or 105 (iBT), and 7.5 for IELTS.

Brown University guarantees that online students will have access to the same resources as on-campus students, including extensive library facilities and student support services. This initiative reflects the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field of data science, particularly in the context of AI and its ethical applications.
