Researchers from the University of Oxford, England are actively participating in COP29, the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November. Representatives from the university’s Blavatnik School of Government, School of Geography and the Environment, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, and other departments are attending to address key global challenges such as climate finance, carbon trading, and environmental law.

Professor Thomas Hale of the Blavatnik School leads the Oxford delegation and emphasised the urgency of aligning national pledges with actionable frameworks under the Paris Agreement. “A trust-building deal on the new finance goal can give countries confidence to reach their maximum ambition,” Hale said.

Azerbaijan hosts this pivotal summit, where over 200 nations have gathered to discuss strategies to mitigate global warming. The conference serves as a precursor to the larger COP30 in Brazil, but participants aim to make tangible progress on global carbon trading rules and the setting of a new climate finance target.

Sam Fankhauser, Professor of Climate Economics at Oxford, highlighted the summit’s role in advancing the Paris Agreement’s goals. “This is a bridging summit, but maintaining momentum is vital,” he said.

The conference also sees Oxford researchers advocating for vulnerable communities. Kath Ford, from the Department of International Development, is spotlighting the impacts of climate change on children and women, calling for stronger social protections in disaster-prone regions.

COP29 represents another step forward in the global fight against climate change, with contributions from leading institutions like Oxford shaping the dialogue.
