UK universities are grappling with financial challenges as applications from Indian students dropped by 20.4% in 2023-24, according to a report by the Office for Students (OfS). The number of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued to Indian applicants fell sharply, from 139,914 to 111,329, raising concerns within the higher education sector.

Indian students have been a significant source of revenue for UK universities, recently surpassing Chinese students in application numbers. However, restrictions on dependents, unclear post-study work visa policies, limited job opportunities, and safety concerns arising from anti-immigration unrest have deterred prospective students from India.

Sanam Arora, Chair of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, remarked, “The Conservative government’s visa policies and the rising skilled worker salary threshold are major reasons for the decline.”

The financial impact is stark, with OfS warning of a potential £3.4 billion reduction in net income for UK universities by 2025-26. Up to 72% of institutions could face deficits if mitigating actions are not taken.

Meanwhile, other countries like Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands are attracting Indian students with more affordable education, job-friendly environments, and clear visa policies.

Experts have called for urgent reforms to improve safety, clarify visa pathways, and support employability. Without these measures, the UK risks losing its edge as a preferred destination for Indian students, further deepening the financial strain on its universities.
