The University of Toronto has introduced one of the highest base funding packages in Canada for its PhD and SJD (Doctor of Juridical Science) students, set to take effect this autumn. The new funding initiative will provide students with an annual base package of $40,000, including tuition fees, aimed at alleviating financial pressures and boosting research outcomes.

This significant increase in funding is set to apply across the university’s three campuses and will support around 2,800 students, including both domestic and international PhD candidates. The move is part of Canada’s broader commitment to investing in research and talent, recognising the vital role of doctoral research in driving economic innovation.

Trevor Young, Vice-President and Provost at the University of Toronto, highlighted the importance of PhD students in advancing the university’s cutting-edge research efforts. He noted, “Our PhD students are at the heart of the University of Toronto’s success in driving innovation across disciplines. By increasing our financial support, we hope to alleviate some of that pressure and improve the graduate student experience.”

The initiative also aims to attract top talent, contributing to Canada’s economy and fostering knowledge creation. Joshua Barker, Vice-Provost of Graduate Research, emphasised the collaborative effort involved in increasing the funding, ensuring that students are supported to excel in their academic and research pursuits.

This move reinforces the University of Toronto’s position as one of Canada’s leading research institutions.
