Wellington, New Zealand – To attract international talent, New Zealand has revised its Post-Study Work Visa (PSW) eligibility criteria, offering enhanced opportunities for postgraduate diploma (PGDip) students transitioning to Master’s programmes.

Under the new rules announced by Immigration NZ, students who complete a 30-week PGDip and immediately enrol in a Master’s degree will now qualify for a PSW visa. This adjustment provides more flexibility for international students and ensures they can remain in New Zealand to work after completing their qualifications.

“This change acknowledges the skills gained through postgraduate diplomas and supports students progressing to higher education levels,” said Vijeta Kanwar, Director of Operations at New Zealand Gateway. Kanwar highlighted this policy’s appeal to students from India and South Asia, who significantly contribute to New Zealand’s international education sector.

Universities across New Zealand have welcomed the update. Riddhi Khurana, a country advisor for South Asia supporting the University of Otago, remarked, “Recognising the PGDip as a standalone qualification for the PSW visa is a step forward. It reflects the value of postgraduate education and ensures students can gain meaningful work experience.”

The changes align with New Zealand’s broader strategy to boost its international student numbers, which saw a 67% increase in 2023, with over 69,000 students choosing the country. Recent surveys show high satisfaction among international students, with nearly 90% rating New Zealand as a positive study destination.

As other study destinations tighten immigration policies, New Zealand’s welcoming approach solidifies its position as a preferred choice for students seeking world-class education and post-study work opportunities.
