To celebrate its 200th anniversary, the University of Manchester, England has launched a transformative £28 million funding initiative for PhD studentships and fellowships, backed by £10 million in matched funding. The programme aims to support over 200 early career researchers between 2025 and 2027, focusing on key themes such as the environment and climate change, health inequalities, creative industries, digital and AI, and open research topics.

Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research, highlighted that the initiative represents a significant investment in the future of research at the university. She said, “This is about celebrating our rich history while ensuring our legacy of innovation and excellence continues.” The university has been supporting students from all backgrounds since its establishment in 1824, a commitment it aims to maintain for the next two centuries.

The Bicentenary PhD Studentships and Fellowships are part of the university’s broader strategy to foster world-class research. The funding will provide new opportunities for postgraduate research students and early career researchers across all three faculties. In addition, the university has launched a £10 million matched funding programme to catalyse philanthropic support for the next generation of research talent.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, emphasised the city’s unique character: “Manchester is a place where history and innovation meet, and this programme demonstrates our commitment to shaping a future that reflects the dynamic spirit of this incredible city.”

Applications for the studentships and fellowships will be open to aspiring researchers worldwide, offering a chance to be part of the university’s prestigious research legacy.
