The University of Manchester has recently celebrated two significant awards granted by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) to its esteemed cosmologists, Steve Cunnington and Dr Michael Keith. The awards recognise their exceptional contributions to the field of astronomy.

Dr Michael Keith, part of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA), was honoured for his role in this multinational collaboration, which includes scientists from over ten European institutes. Reflecting on the recognition, Dr Keith expressed, “I am very proud of the work we have done as part of this decades-long project. The award not only highlights the incredible scientific results but also the diverse and supportive nature of our team.”

EPTA brings together researchers from various backgrounds and supports early career scientists. This is a testament to the collaborative spirit and success of the project, which has contributed valuable insights into the universe.

Dr Steve Cunnington, who joined the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in 2022, was awarded the Early Career Award for his outstanding achievements in astronomy. His research involves using radio telescopes to map the universe’s structure across billions of light-years. Dr Cunnington expressed his passion for the field, saying, “I am thrilled that the Royal Astronomical Society is recognising my work. This award serves as both an honour and a challenge to continue the legacy of previous winners.”

Additionally, the University of Manchester is at the forefront of identifying the biological mechanisms through which magnetic forces affect both animals and humans. In collaboration with the University of Leicester and Oxford University, the team is studying the role of the protein Cryptochrome (CRY) in magnetoreception, shedding light on how animals detect magnetic fields.

These prestigious accolades highlight the university’s significant contributions to both astronomy and biological sciences, cementing its reputation as a leader in cutting-edge research in the UK.
