University of Reading Vice-Chancellor to Lead New Oxfordshire Flooding Group

Professor Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, has been appointed to chair a newly formed Oxfordshire flooding group. This initiative aims to enhance the region’s preparedness and response to flooding, a growing concern due to climate change.
The Oxfordshire Flooding Group, which includes representatives from various city and district councils, will focus on developing more effective strategies for flood risk management. Professor Van de Noort expressed his commitment to working with local communities across the region, emphasising the importance of collective action in reducing the impact of floods. “Flooding affects everyone, and it’s crucial to prepare and respond effectively to mitigate its worst consequences,” he said. “At the University of Reading, we have some of the world’s leading experts in weather, climate, and flood science who advise governments on flood risk management.”
Councillor Dr Pete Sudbury, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, praised Professor Van de Noort’s appointment, noting his previous leadership on the Thames Valley Flood and Coastal Committee. “With extreme rainfall events on the rise, we must shift towards a more comprehensive approach to flooding, and having Robert on board will significantly accelerate our efforts,” he said.
The establishment of the Oxfordshire Flooding Group aligns with the growing need for innovative flood management solutions in the UK, particularly as climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. Professor Van de Noort’s leadership, backed by the expertise from the University of Reading, is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s flood resilience strategies moving forward.
