The University of Bath has strengthened its commitment to advancing life sciences by partnering with South West Life Sciences, a new initiative launched by the University of Bristol’s Translational Research Hub in 2024. This collaboration aims to increase inward investment, foster collaboration, and drive growth within the life sciences sector in the South West of the UK.

The University of Bath has already established a strong presence in the sector, having created six spinout companies since 2021. These companies, such as Revolver Therapeutics, Prothea Technologies, and Ingenium AI, are focused on pioneering research in health and life sciences.

Professor Sarah Hainsworth OBE, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Bath, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “The UK is a global hub for Life Sciences, and the University of Bath is delighted to be part of South West Life Sciences, a core initiative for increasing inward investment, collaboration, and growth.”

Other key partners in the initiative include Science Creates, GW4, Health Innovation West of England, and Invest Bristol and Bath. Together, these organisations will contribute to addressing some of society’s most pressing health challenges while driving economic growth in the region.

The South West region is already a strong player in the UK life sciences sector, home to over 370 life sciences companies employing around 20,000 people. The region’s life sciences and technology ecosystem was valued at £8.1bn in 2022, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country.

Professor Philip Ingham, Head of the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, noted, “South West Life Science is an important opportunity to drive awareness and connectivity of all the activity and expertise that exists in the region.”

With a wealth of innovative research and a growing network of partners, the South West region is poised to continue its rapid development as a hub for life sciences excellence in the UK.
