Two University of Tulsa students in the United States have been awarded the highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship, funded by the US Department of State, supports undergraduate students seeking transformative study abroad experiences.

The recipients, Alexa Miranda and Xayda Alexander, were praised for their academic excellence and commitment to global learning. Vice Provost of Global Engagement Vivian Wang congratulated the students, highlighting the significance of studying abroad in shaping a student’s personal and professional growth.

Junior Xayda Alexander, a psychology and Spanish major with a minor in historical trauma and transformation, plans to travel to Santiago, Chile. Through the Council on International Educational Exchange’s Summer in Santiago programme, she will work as a student and intern. Reflecting on the scholarship, Alexander said, “Studying abroad has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, and this scholarship makes my dream possible.” She also expressed excitement about meeting her pen pal in Santiago, a connection she made during her Spanish course.

Alexa Miranda, an energy management senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration, described the scholarship as a “tremendous honour.” She added, “This opportunity reflects my commitment to academic excellence and global citizenship. It represents an opportunity to grow personally and professionally while breaking barriers and inspiring others to pursue similar transformative experiences.”

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a US programme designed to broaden access to undergraduate study abroad opportunities. Recipients can only receive the scholarship once and are subject to health and security conditions in their chosen destinations.

This year’s winners from the United States underscore the life-changing potential of global education, reaffirming the country’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and academic excellence through initiatives like the Gilman Scholarship.
