The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, has announced that approximately 4,300 students have secured offers in its major admissions round for Semester 1, 2025. This brings the total number of offers issued by UQ this year to around 10,700. The surge in applications reflects a 6% increase in program preferences, showcasing a sector-wide growth in demand.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry highlighted UQ’s appeal as a top choice for school leavers, with nearly a third of all first preferences across the state. “We are thrilled to welcome future engineers, scientists, health professionals, teachers, and leaders to our community,” said Professor Terry.

The university has seen a rise in demand for business, law, nursing, education, and allied health disciplines. Nursing, in particular, recorded a significant increase, with 100 additional offers compared to last year. Notably, more than 2,600 students from regional areas or low socio-economic backgrounds received offers, emphasising UQ’s commitment to accessibility.

Professor Terry also praised the Young Achievers Program, which has supported nearly 2,000 underrepresented students through mentoring, financial assistance, and pathways into higher education.

UQ Research Highlights Greenspace Benefits

In other news, a study led by UQ’s School of Public Health PhD candidate, Chinonso Odebeatu, has revealed the health benefits of greenspace exposure, particularly in boosting vitamin D levels. The research found that greenspaces enhance exposure to Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, which aids in vitamin D synthesis, critical for cardiovascular, skeletal, and metabolic health.

“Vitamin D deficiency can lead to serious health conditions, including rickets, osteoporosis, and diabetes,” said Odebeatu. The study also underscores the importance of equitable access to greenspaces, as emphasised by Associate Professor Nicholas Osborne.

With this research, the University of Queensland continues to underscore Australia’s leadership in impactful and community-focused academic initiatives.
