The University of Warwick in the United Kingdom has appointed Bience Gawanas, a Namibian diplomat, lawyer, and advocate for social justice, as its new Chancellor. Gawanas, who began her tenure on 23 January 2025, will serve as the ceremonial head of the institution, presiding over key events such as graduation ceremonies and promoting the university’s commitment to diversity, excellence, and social impact.

Reflecting on her new role, Gawanas, an alumna of the university, expressed both honour and responsibility. “When I walked through the gates of Warwick in 1982 as a student, becoming Chancellor was the last thing on my mind. I hope my journey inspires young women, especially Black women, to see the possibilities ahead,” she said. She emphasised her commitment to listening, learning, and driving improvement during her term, while remaining approachable and connected with the university community.

Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, Professor Stuart Croft, highlighted Gawanas’s extensive international experience and dedication to education and equality. “Her leadership on the global stage and her personal story as a Warwick alumna make her the perfect choice as our next Chancellor. We are delighted to welcome her back to Warwick,” he said.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Impact

Gawanas brings over four decades of experience in human rights, law, and social justice. She has held senior positions with the United Nations, the African Union, and the Namibian government, championing gender equality, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

In recognition of her achievements, Gawanas was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Warwick in 2023. She succeeds Baroness Catherine Ashton, who served as Chancellor since 2016.

The United Kingdom’s University of Warwick, known for fostering academic excellence and global impact, marks a new chapter with Gawanas’s appointment, reflecting its ongoing dedication to diversity and leadership on a global scale.
