Newcastle University Considers Opening Campus in India

Newcastle University, based in the UK, has announced its serious consideration of opening a campus in India. The university’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Chris Day, revealed the plans at a British Council event in Delhi, following similar announcements from other UK institutions.
Chris Day stated, “It won’t surprise you to hear that Newcastle is seriously considering opening a campus here in India. We’re currently thinking about where that might be and who our partners might be. I am now leaving India absolutely convinced that we need to do this.” The announcement highlights the growing interest among UK universities in expanding their presence in India, with Day emphasising that the primary focus is now on the campus’s location, subjects offered, and potential partnerships.
Newcastle’s move follows the University of Surrey’s recent decision to establish a campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, signalling a shift towards stronger educational ties between the UK and India. As Day further mentioned, “It almost seems that every day at the moment there’s another announcement” about UK universities looking to set up campuses abroad, underlining the significance of India in this global expansion.
While the details of Newcastle’s campus plans remain under consideration, the announcement has garnered significant attention, particularly in light of India’s growing demand for quality higher education. The university’s exploration of a campus in India aligns with its commitment to internationalising education and providing more accessible opportunities for students in the region.
