Researchers at the University of Sheffield have developed a new AI framework aimed at helping businesses and government organisations implement artificial intelligence (AI) more effectively. The framework encourages a problem-first approach rather than a technology-first mindset, ensuring AI is used as a tool to achieve strategic goals.

Dr Denis Newman-Griffis, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Theme Lead for AI-enabled research at Sheffield’s Centre for Machine Intelligence, highlighted the need for organisations to rethink their approach to AI. He stated, “Businesses and government increasingly recognise AI’s potential, but discussions often focus on how AI works rather than how it fits into existing processes. Our framework shifts the focus to how AI can enhance what organisations already do.”

He further explained that by identifying business needs first, organisations can adopt AI in a more structured and effective way, integrating it into their operations with a clear purpose.

AI Thinking: A Framework for Practical AI Use

The University of Sheffield’s new framework, AI Thinking, structures AI adoption into five key steps:

  • Informing specific processes
  • Defining AI applications and objectives
  • Comparing AI technology options
  • Selecting appropriate data sources
  • Applying AI within specific operational contexts

Dr Newman-Griffis emphasised that understanding AI should not be limited to computer science experts. “AI Thinking is designed for professionals across all sectors, enabling teams to collaborate and integrate AI in a way that aligns with operational and strategic goals.”

AI Adoption in the UK Workforce

Despite the growing global focus on AI, the UK lags in workplace adoption. According to the University of Sheffield, only 29% of the UK workforce currently uses generative AI tools like ChatGPT at work, while 23% lack confidence in using AI technologies.

The AI Thinking framework aims to bridge this gap by making AI adoption more accessible, strategic, and ethical, ultimately helping UK businesses and government bodies stay competitive in an AI-driven world.
