The University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, and the Gough Family Foundation have renewed their long standing partnership, extending the Gough Family Foundation MBA Leaders Scholarship for an additional four years, until 2030. This renewal aims to enhance leadership development and provide international opportunities for scholars in New Zealand.

Expanding Global Learning Opportunities

Ben Gough, founder of the Gough Family Foundation, stated:
“Leveraging the strengths and relationships of both UC and the Gough Family Foundation has enabled scholars to study at some of the world’s most prestigious universities and connect with some of the finest business minds in New Zealand. The outcomes of this opportunity positively impact all aspects of their lives—personally, professionally, and within their communities.”

The updated programme, incorporating scholar feedback, now includes enhanced international opportunities. Scholars will have the chance to collaborate with esteemed institutions such as Aalto University in Finland and Stanford University in the United States, enabling them to engage in knowledge exchange, build global networks, and develop leadership skills. The programme also offers participation in Stanford’s renowned Design Thinking course.

Leadership Development and Mentoring

A key addition to the scholarship is the bespoke Courage in Leadership course, developed in partnership with Outward Bound. This transformative programme combines practical challenges with reflective learning, refining leadership skills based on past scholars’ experiences.

The scholarship also includes one-on-one mentoring with successful business leaders in New Zealand, a significant contribution towards UC MBA course fees, and an international experience grant to facilitate global learning. Scholarship recipients pursue their MBA at UC Business School, a triple-crown-accredited institution, placing them among an elite group of leaders.

UC Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cheryl de la Rey, highlighted:
“This renewed partnership reflects our shared vision to develop leaders who excel and uplift communities. The enhanced scholarship programme equips scholars with the skills and global perspectives essential for modern leadership.”

Each year, three scholarships are awarded to outstanding candidates enrolled in UC’s MBA programme. Recipients are selected based on leadership potential, character, commercial acumen, and commitment to making a positive impact in their respective fields.
