Stanford University, California, United States has announced a 4% increase in tuition fees for the 2025–26 academic year, affecting both undergraduate and postgraduate students. However, those receiving need-based financial aid will see no change in their tuition costs.

According to a statement from The Stanford Daily, the financial aid budget has also been expanded, ensuring that nearly half of all undergraduates receiving aid will not be affected—provided their family’s financial circumstances remain the same.

Breakdown of the Fee Increase

Tuition will rise by $868 per quarter, with general postgraduate tuition also increasing by 4%. This increment is lower than last year’s rise, which saw tuition increase by 5.5%, while room and board fees surged by 7%.

Families earning below $150,000 per year will continue to be exempt from making a parental contribution towards tuition, while those earning under $100,000 will still receive full coverage for tuition, room, and board.

“This year, both tuition and room and board fees are expected to increase by 4%, with undergraduate housing costs rising to $22,167 per quarter,” the Stanford administration confirmed in a statement.

Changes to the Undergraduate Housing Process

In addition to the tuition rise, Stanford’s undergraduate housing application process for the 2025–26 academic year will open a month earlier than usual, starting on 3 March and closing on 16 April 2025.

Students requiring disability-related housing accommodations will have one month less to submit their applications, a change that has raised concerns among students.

“If people who genuinely need Office of Accessible Education (OAE) support have less time, it might add stress rather than ease their process,” said Shane Mion (’26).

Last year, Stanford’s housing process faced controversy when many third-year students were left unassigned and had to be accommodated in quads and triples.

With this latest tuition increase, Stanford University continues to navigate rising education costs while maintaining its commitment to financial aid support across the United States.
