The University of Melbourne has been recognised as Australia’s leading university for research and teaching in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2025. Ranked 47th globally, the university has strengthened its standing as a premier institution in Australia’s higher education sector.

Global Recognition for Australian Education

The rankings, based on an invitation-only academic opinion survey, highlight the university’s growing influence in research, teaching, and global collaborations. Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston AO expressed pride in the achievement, stating that the recognition will enhance global partnerships and create more opportunities for students and researchers.

“This acknowledgement from our peers worldwide reflects the outstanding contributions of our exceptional staff, strong global connections, and comprehensive academic environment,” she said. She also emphasised the university’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with alumni, academic institutions, and employers in Australia and beyond.

Australia’s Growing Reputation in Higher Education

Professor Johnston highlighted the University of Melbourne’s long-standing excellence across various disciplines, including the arts, humanities, sciences, and professional fields. She noted that the rise of Australian universities in global rankings reinforces the country’s status as a hub for world-class education and research.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Wesley echoed these sentiments, stating that Australia is rapidly emerging as a key centre for education and research in the Asia-Pacific region. He highlighted the University of Melbourne’s global engagement initiatives, such as the Melbourne Global Centre in Delhi and partnerships through the Oceania Institute, Asialink, and the Australia India Institute.

“Our global collaborations ensure that the expertise and excellence of Melbourne academics are recognised on the world stage,” he said.

With this latest recognition, the University of Melbourne continues to cement Australia’s reputation as a leader in higher education and innovation.
