Five students from the University of Wyoming have been awarded the prestigious Gilman Scholarship, enabling them to study abroad this semester. The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program has granted a total of $19,500 to support their international education.

The Gilman Scholarship is a competitive programme designed to help undergraduate students in the United States gain global exposure. This year, approximately 1,600 students across the country have been selected to study in nearly 90 countries worldwide.

University of Wyoming Scholars Explore the World

The five scholarship recipients from the University of Wyoming include Nick Williams, Phoenix Strobel, Mason Mercier, Taniesha Smith, and Orlando Gonzalez Perez. The university’s Education Abroad Office and Global Engagement Office, led by Director Shelley Jewell, have played a crucial role in supporting these students.

Nick Williams, who studied at Hanyang University in South Korea, shared how the experience enriched his understanding of Korean culture and design practices. “I focused on how the culture inspired design and incorporated AI-driven approaches to optimise workflows,” he said.

Taniesha Smith, a single mother and business major, highlighted the scholarship’s impact on her career and personal journey. “This opportunity allows me to explore international markets and diverse cultures. More importantly, it shows my children that with determination, you can achieve your dreams,” she said.

UW’s Jill Johnson Honoured for Global Engagement

In another recognition, Jill Johnson, the University of Wyoming’s Director of International Students and Scholars (ISS), has been named Staff Employee of the Fourth Quarter.

Johnson was praised for her efforts in supporting international students and managing cultural and administrative challenges. “She orchestrates a talented team that builds community, navigates immigration policies, and assists students facing complex personal situations,” her nominator said.

With these achievements, the University of Wyoming continues to strengthen its commitment to global education and student success.
