Cornell University Announces New Leadership for Research and Innovation

Cornell University has announced key leadership appointments aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and external engagement. Effective 1 March 2025, Krystyn J. Van Vliet will serve as the Vice-President for Innovation and External Engagement Strategy, while Dr Gary Koretzky has been appointed as the Interim Vice-Provost for Research.

The announcement was made by Provost Kavita Bala, who emphasised the importance of these roles in maintaining Cornell University’s research leadership.

Strengthening Research and Innovation

Koretzky, a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, will oversee research administration at Cornell Tech, Ithaca, and AgriTech campuses. His role includes managing laboratories, research centres, and over 20 multidisciplinary research facilities.

Expressing his commitment, Koretzky stated, “Scholarship and discovery at Cornell are truly world-class. My goal is to ensure faculty have the resources they need to flourish and to strengthen partnerships across campuses.”

Meanwhile, Van Vliet, a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur, transitions into her new role after serving as Cornell’s Vice-President for Research and Innovation since 2023. She previously worked at MIT, focusing on technology transfer and industry partnerships.

“This is an exciting time to connect Cornell’s legacy of innovation with a strategic approach to external engagement,” said Van Vliet, highlighting her vision to drive faculty-led research and industry collaborations.
