In a significant step for transnational education, the first UK-Australia joint university campus has been launched in Bandung, West Java. The Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia (DLI) campus aims to provide Indonesian students with world-class education and new academic opportunities.

The launch event was attended by senior government officials, education sector leaders, and diplomatic representatives. Professor Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, highlighted the importance of strengthening academic partnerships with Indonesia. He stated that DLI would offer a balanced approach to excellence in education and research, empowering students with a truly world-class experience.

Professor Andy Schofield, Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, echoed these sentiments, calling the launch a “truly international celebration” of what leading universities can achieve through collaboration.

The initiative has received strong backing from the United Kingdom. British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, emphasised the UK’s leadership in transnational education, stating that the UK Government has supported the project since its initiation in 2022. Similarly, Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia, Gita Kamath, highlighted the significance of education in strengthening the Australia-Indonesia relationship.

Courses at the new UK-Australia joint campus will commence in September, initially offering Business and Information Technology programmes. The campus is part of a trilateral education partnership, allowing students to earn dual undergraduate degrees from two globally recognised universities.

With its strategic location just an hour from Jakarta via high-speed rail, the campus is expected to become a key hub for international education in Indonesia.
