Charles Darwin University (CDU), Australia, is set to expand its global footprint by establishing a study centre in London and launching online postgraduate programmes in the United Kingdom. The university plans to introduce a flexible Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in the final quarter of 2025.

The decision follows a CDU council vote in favour of transnational education. CDU Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Scott Bowman, highlighted the strategic timing of the move, citing recent international student visa restrictions in Australia.

“It is the right time to explore transnational education, and the UK presents an opportunity to deliver our courses without major changes to content or delivery,” Professor Bowman stated. “Since visa restrictions and caps were announced, I have encouraged our team to think boldly about keeping CDU on a sustainable path.”

Expanding Australia’s Education Reach

CDU, recognised as a leader in online higher education across Australia, will leverage its expertise in digital course delivery. The London-based study centre will combine online learning with intensive masterclasses, offering a unique approach to postgraduate education in the UK market.

“Our approach to higher education is distinct, and this difference will attract students in the UK,” Professor Bowman added. “By setting up in the UK, we are exporting a high-quality Australian education experience.”

Boosting Global Presence and Research Ties

Beyond expanding its student base, CDU expects its UK presence to enhance its global reputation and foster international research collaborations.

“The transnational model is just one of many initiatives we are exploring while continuing to advocate for policy changes in Australia,” Professor Bowman said. “If we can’t bring students to us, we must go out and find them.”

He emphasised the importance of international students to the Northern Territory’s economy and community, stating that CDU’s global expansion will help sustain world-class education and training in Australia.
