Dr Bárbara Brayner from Deakin University has been awarded a four-year MS Australia Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant worth $225,000 to investigate the link between dietary fat and the onset and progression of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Dr Brayner, from the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), will examine how different types of dietary fat influence the risk and progression of MS. MS is the most common acquired neurological disease among young adults, yet its exact cause remains unknown. Environmental and genetic factors are believed to play a role.

‘Dietary fat is one of the most debated topics in MS research. Our project aims to determine whether high-fat or low-fat diets, specific high-fat foods, or types of fat impact MS risk and progression,’ Dr Brayner stated. ‘This research could be crucial for those at risk or living with MS, as dietary changes are relatively simple and cost-effective.’

The project team also includes Professor Bruce Taylor from the University of Tasmania and Professor Lucinda Black from IPAN. Their research aims to provide valuable insights that could inform dietary recommendations for MS patients and those at risk of developing the condition.

Deakin University Celebrates 50 Years of Art Collecting

Alongside this groundbreaking research, Deakin University is celebrating 50 years of art collecting with a special exhibition curated by James Lynch and Leanne Willis, Senior Manager of the Art Collection.

‘The exhibition takes audiences on a journey through five decades of collecting, featuring objects representing every year since Deakin’s inception in 1974,’ said Willis.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin will officially launch the event on 18 March 2025. The exhibition highlights contributions from the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Programme and special commissions reflecting the university’s evolving community.

With this milestone celebration and a major research grant, Deakin University continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading institution in Australia, making significant contributions to both scientific research and the arts.
