UK’s Loughborough University has launched a groundbreaking Women in Sport Research and Innovation Hub, backed by a £2 million investment.

Loughborough University in the UK has introduced a dedicated Women in Sport Research and Innovation Hub to drive progress in women’s sports. The initiative was officially launched by Stephanie Peacock, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society, and Youth, under the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The hub will bring together industry leaders, top academics, elite athletes, and national governing bodies to advance research in key areas. It will focus on the impact of the menstrual cycle on sports nutrition, the development of pregnancy and postpartum sportswear, sports performance enhancement, and innovations in digital technology and sports bras.

Professor Jo Maher, Loughborough University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Sport, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Women’s sport is growing rapidly, but research has yet to catch up with the unique challenges faced in the sector. Loughborough University is committed to leveraging our expertise to drive meaningful change.”

Transforming Women’s Sport

Karen Carney OBE, Loughborough University’s Ambassador for Sport, Health, and Wellbeing, called the initiative a “game-changer” for women’s sport. She emphasised that women athletes face distinct physical, mental, and social health challenges, which remain under-researched. “This hub is a powerful step toward improving women’s sport across all levels—community, health, and elite performance,” she added.

Dr Katie Tryon, Commercial Director at Vitality, echoed this sentiment, pointing out that women’s participation in sports remains below recommended levels. She affirmed that Vitality is committed to supporting the initiative, stating, “This partnership will help us better understand and break down the barriers preventing women from leading more active lives.”

With this pioneering initiative, Loughborough University aims to reshape women’s sport in the UK and beyond, ensuring tailored research and solutions that address the specific needs of female athletes.
