The University of Manchester, one of the United Kingdom’s top-ranking institutions, has officially opened applications for its MA in Social Anthropology for the 2025 academic year. The one-year full-time postgraduate programme offers students the opportunity to explore the complexities of human societies, cultures, and social practices across both Western and non-Western contexts.

International applicants, including those from India, are eligible to apply, with the tuition fee for Indian students set at £30,000 per annum. The programme includes four 15-credit core modules totalling 60 credits. These are: Key Approaches to Social Anthropology, Ethnography Reading Seminar, Contemporary Debates, and Image Text and Fieldwork. Students also have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of elective modules across the Faculty of Humanities.

The MA aims to deepen students’ understanding of global social dynamics and challenge conventional worldviews. As per the university, “you will gain a thorough foundation in classical and contemporary debates in social anthropology, alongside exposure to the unique research methods and ethical stances inherent to the discipline.”

Eligibility and Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a UK bachelor’s degree with a First or Upper Second classification, or an equivalent overseas degree. Those with a Lower Second may be considered for the Postgraduate Diploma track. A percentage between 60% to 70% is generally expected for Indian students.

Language proficiency requirements include an IELTS score of 7.0 overall (with at least 7 in writing) or a TOEFL iBT score of 100 (minimum 25 in writing). Pearson Test of English and pre-sessional English course options are also available for those not meeting the direct entry criteria.

Scholarships for International Students

The University of Manchester offers several scholarships to ease financial burdens. Notable among them is the £10,000 Humanities Bicentenary Scholarship and the £8,000 Global Futures Scholarship specifically for South Asian students. Eligible alumni may also benefit from a £3,000 Manchester Alumni Scholarship Scheme.

With world-class faculty and a diverse curriculum, this UK-based programme offers students a strong academic and cultural foundation in the field of social anthropology.
