Two Oxford Academics Receive Prestigious UK Quantum Technology Fellowships

In a major boost to the UK’s cutting-edge research in quantum science, two academics from the University of Oxford have been awarded prestigious Quantum Technology Career Acceleration Fellowships. Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), these fellowships aim to support the most promising early-career researchers in the field of quantum technology.

Out of the 11 fellowships awarded nationwide, two have been granted to Dr Jacob Blackmore from the Department of Physics and Dr Zhenyu Cai from the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford. These fellowships, with a combined total investment of £15 million, are designed to fast-track the careers of emerging leaders in quantum innovation and foster industry collaboration.

Dr Blackmore, who specialises in ion trapping, expressed his enthusiasm: “The fellowship is my opportunity to make a significant mark on the group and the quantum technology landscape by bringing my experience of molecular systems into Oxford’s excellent quantum computing community.”

The UK Government continues to prioritise investment in quantum research. Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science and Technology, emphasised the technology’s potential: “Quantum – manipulating the universe at its smallest scale – has the potential to save millions for our economy, create thousands of jobs, and improve businesses across the country.”

The fellowships will enable researchers to deepen their academic contributions, engage with industry end-users, and translate innovative ideas into real-world applications. The UK, through institutions like Oxford, is further solidifying its role as a global hub for quantum research.

Professor Charlotte Deane, Executive Chair of EPSRC, highlighted the broader impact: “Building a thriving and diverse quantum workforce is vital to unlocking economic and societal benefits. This investment not only boosts skills but also strengthens the research base across the country.”

As the UK continues to advance in the global quantum race, such initiatives underscore its commitment to pioneering science and fostering the next generation of research leaders.
