In a landmark move for international education, Bedford School, one of the United Kingdom’s oldest public independent schools, is set to open its first-ever British girls’ school in India. Located in Mohali, near Chandigarh, the new purpose-built campus will cater to students aged 3 to 18, marking a significant expansion of British education in the country.

While Bedford has historically been a boys’ school in the UK, the Mohali branch will be exclusively for girls, positioning itself as India’s first British international girls’ school. The initiative comes amid growing demand for high-quality, holistic education in India’s urban centres.

According to Iwan Lloyd, International Development Director at Bedford School, Mohali was chosen for its educational vibrancy and strategic growth. “It is one of India’s most dynamic, rapidly growing and forward-thinking cities,” he noted.

The 14-acre campus is being developed in partnership with the Doon International Education Society and supported by ISC Research. It will feature modern classrooms, a 1,000-seat auditorium, advanced science and tech labs, extensive sports facilities, and art and music studios. Students will follow the British curriculum in the primary years, with the option to transition into Indian or British pathways at the secondary level.

The school’s ethos will focus on academic excellence, personal development, and strong values. “Our Mohali campus will offer an inclusive environment that respects Indian traditions while delivering international standards,” said Lloyd, highlighting plans for a multicultural faculty team from both the UK and India.

This move aligns with a broader trend of British independent schools entering India’s education sector. Institutions such as Wellington College, Harrow School, and Shrewsbury International School have already established or announced new campuses across India.

Despite suggestions that Bedford’s expansion may be a response to the UK’s recent VAT policy on private schools, Lloyd maintains that international growth has always been part of Bedford’s vision.
